25 things that you don’t know about me
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Gil (http://www.gilscorner.com/)tagged me to write these 25 things that everybody is writing about themselves, so here goes:
- I’m a committed Christian. I attend what was determined to be the fastest growing church in America last year, http://www.ChurchoftheHighlands.com in Birmingham, AL. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL church!!
- I have 3 grown children
- I have 5 grandchildren, ranging in age from 4 to 8 years, three boys and two girls
- My back yard is adjacent to my daughter’s back yard, so her 3 children visit often, I babysit often, and I’m called on for many other things OFTEN, which is why it is very difficult for me to get much done each day.
- In one of my former lives, I was a pilot. My first husband was learning to fly and he wanted me to learn to fly also. I was immediately drawn to it and received my pilot’s license within the minimum required hours.
- I continued my pilot training to become a flight instructor so other people could pay me to fly. I taught basic flight training, commercial training and instrument training in single engine land planes (the small planes).
- Another one of my former lives – I had my own stained glass studio where I taught people how to make stained glass windows and other stained glass objects. Just as I was about to start making money in that business there was a 100-year flood in the area where most of my customers lived. Their priority changed from making stained glass windows to getting their homes livable again. My business did not survive that catastrophe even though I was not flooded.
- You can see that I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit.
- I started college as an art major because growing up, I always knew that was what I wanted to be.
- But my husband-to-be told me that being an art major would not make me any money, so I changed to library science because that was what my sister had majored in.
- I was a children’s librarian for 2 years after college and then started having my children. When I went back into the work world, I went more into business than library work.
- It was while I was a pension administrator for a life insurance company that my boss showed me an article in Working Women Magazine that said a corporate librarian was one of the top 25 jobs for women in America.
- Having found out that the professional degree for librarians is the master’s degree, I went back to school and got my master’s degree.
- The job that God had waiting for me when I graduated was a research librarian in an electric utility. So my daughter (my youngest) and I moved from Mississippi to Alabama to take this job.
- I found out that my varied background and all my “former lives”, including being a business owner, prepared me perfectly for my research job. Although a librarian doesn’t have to know everything, he/she needs to know where to find things. Sometimes you have to have SOME knowledge about a subject in order to even know where to start looking for information. There were things that I know that most people wouldn’t have a clue: information about weather that I had to learn to be a pilot; documents that you need to have to start a business and run a business; or even human resource type things that I learned as a pension administrator.
- I retired from my full time job July 2008, after 18 years, so I could devote my time to getting my online business started. Only after starting with Alex Jeffreys have I actually begun to make progress!
- One of my heart-felt desires is to help people who need jobs. There are so many people out there who have always worked and have a good work ethic and now through no fault of their own, they are out of work. I not only want to help people online who want to make a living online (wherever they are in the world), but take what I am now learning to local people and teach them “hands-on”. That would have been so helpful to me because the main obstacles that I’ve had to overcome in this course are the technical challenges. These don’t come naturally to me. But if I can take others and walk them thru the steps, I think they would get up and running 10 times faster than I.
- I want to go on mission trips with groups from my church. They are usually gone for 3 weeks at a time. My Internet Marketing business running on auto-pilot will allow me to be away that long.
- Our church also plants churches throughout the US and in some foreign countries. I want to be a part of that. And I want to contribute resources to that.
- In Gene’s answer to the Challenge (http://geneilten.com/i-have-taken-up-the-challenge.html/ ), he mentioned that he is on the shy side. I tend to be shy, as well. It is much easier for me to write, rather than speak, because I can think about what I am going to say and rewrite as necessary. Also, there is a sort of “hiding behind the computer” going on. However, once I’ve gotten to know a few of you online, I will be much more willing to talk to you in person if we all meet at a conference or something. I’ll feel like I already know you.
- I watch very little TV. I will catch the late news cast if I remember it. Otherwise, there seems to be little on TV that I consider worth watching.
- Oh yes, my 91 year old mother lived with me for almost 4 years. We got along fine for the first almost 3 years until she began to act like an “old person.” Told everybody I thought I was HER mother. Actually, the roles do get reversed.
- She decided in late May of this year that she was ready for assisted living. I had decided that a long time ago and was SO GLAD that it was her idea. She is happy there and I am at least a little freer to do what I need to do, although still taking care of her affairs.
- I’ll steal #21 from Gene: “Don’t even ask how much I have spent on Internet Marketing related stuff and how much of it is sitting on my shelves or on my hard drive.”
- That has made me deeply in debt which seems to be a prevailing theme among those of us who aspire to “make it” online.
- I’ll add one more – I was just told today by our fellow student, Gil – http://www.gilscorner.com/ that what I had thought was a negative, my long-windedness, should actually be viewed as a positive – I should be able to write an ebook!

Hi Donna,
Your blog looks great! Looks like you found the solution you were looking for about the optin box and the picture. Looks Good.
Also, I’m think Gil’s challenge to you was met and exceeded. Those 25 things make me feel like I know you already.
The following is not a big deal, but I wanted to check if it is anything or not:
Is it just my computer, or does the widget title on your Fellow students of Alex Jeffreys widget drop down a little over the list of names?
If you have noticed it on your screen as well, I can show you a quick and easy fix for that problem. Just let me know.
Best regards,
Byron.

Hi Byron,
Thanks for your kind remarks about my “great looking blog”. Yes, Gil was the one who helped me with my optin box.
Actually, I had noticed the overlap of the widget title over the fellow students. It’s been that way for quite some time, but I was working on that optin box and felt this was something that could wait till later. Yes, please do show me this quick and easy fix for the problem.
I am so grateful for all you fellow students who have a grasp of these IT issues that I have no clue about. I love the fact that you are all willing to help your IT-challenged colleagues.
While we are at it, do you have a really good tool to convert from a Word doc to a pdf doc? Mine doesn’t work and the one mentioned in the forum apparently didn’t download properly for me. so I couldn’t get it to work.
I just posted a comment on your blog. It looks GREAT!

Dawn,
Very nice… A pilot. I used to think that renting a plane was cheap until I realized the fuel was extra.
A King Air is my dream…
Also, go for the humanitarian mission trip. A couple years ago, I was asked to go to Honduras for World Vision and work in the hills with pick axes and shovels helping farmers put in irrigation systems.
You think you’re going to help them, but what you’ll get is out of this world.
You’ll never be the same.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Dawn,
Like many other AJ students I’m keen to learn tips for increasing traffic.
You given me the push to find a widget for ‘related posts’.
I tried one, but it appeared in the sidebar. Any suggestions ?
Thanks for the tip

Hi Rob,
Sorry to be so long getting back to you. Too many other things going on lately to get back to blogging, the one thing I SHOULD be doing.
Yes, flying isn’t cheap. And making a living as a flight instructor doesn’t really work either, as most of the cost of lessons goes toward the plane and not the instructor. That’s why most flight instructors do that as a side job. But it was fun.
Yes, I am looking forward to being able to do missions work. Everyone I’ve talked to who has done that says it’s an experience not to be missed.
Looking at your blog, looks like you do offline coaching classes, too. That is one of the things I want to do. Speaking of your blog, you have a VERY ACTIVE blog. You must have been doing this for some time. I need to go visit more often. Lots of good content over there.

Yes, offline coaching is one of my business activities. If you’ll post a comment on my blog post here
http://www.robcanyon.com/video/dcb/
you’ll get a chance to see some of what I do.
Speak soon,
Rob
P.S. Over 60 people including Alex Jeffreys himself has commented on the above post…

Hi John,
I am SO NOT TECHIE, so I hope I can help. I did a Google search to see what ‘related posts’ plugins there are. I found one that might be the one you used because it kind of described what you said occurred for you. It’s just called “Related Posts” by Rene` Ade. ( http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/related-posts/ ) It says it contains a sidebar widget, etc., but it mentions being able to configure it to appear in other places, such as at the bottom of the post. If you want to stay with this one (if this is the one you tried), you might want to check out their site to see how to configure it to put it where you want it.
The one I have added is “Yet Another Related Posts Plugin” (YARPP), because I saw a short video of some well-known blogger who really likes this plugin. I had not completed the installation until tonight because I couldn’t figure out what they meant by their final instructions to “simply” move the YARPP template files into your theme to complete installation. It tells where these are located and where the theme is located. But for a non-techie, it just was not “simple”. But then as I looked more closely I saw that the theme location was on my hosting account. So I called my hosting company and they walked me through getting it placed where it belongs. (I used FileZilla) So it is now installed, but until I actually have some related posts, I won’t know how well it works. If you decide to use YARPP, that’s what it takes to complete the installation.
Hope this helps. And let me know which one you wind up using and how well it works for you.

Yes, Rob, I saw Alex Jeffreys comment. Interesting. I don’t think he’s ever visited my blog.
In fact, it was interesting reading what others had to say on your blog. I especially liked seeing their last posts.
You’re doing great with your blog!

Hey Dawn!
I just popped over from Rob’s Doubleclick blog. Thank you for the kind mentions of my last post. We have a lot in common. #1 AMEN! #2 I am a former Flight Nurse, we flew Cessna 421Cs and an AS350 helicopter. #7. I used to dabble in stained glass and hope to in the future. #18, My wife and I went on a short term mission to Haiti in 2000. #19. My goal as well for my church. #21. Also me. (Except for “Dirty Jobs” I have watched it for hours.) #24 & 25 yep.
Thanks also for pointing out the picture of Alex’s book not showing up on all my pages, Matt Wolfe and I got it straightened out.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Gene, Thanks for your comments. It had been so long since I wrote those 25 things that I had to go back and see what I said on those numbers you mentioned. It’s good to know we are kindred souls.
I think I am going to enjoy Rob’s course. I have been enjoying Alex’s course and feel somewhat guilty in putting his on hold for now, but Rob said he’s going to teach us how to make money more quickly and that’s what I REALLY need to do.
It’s good to see so many of Alex’s students in Rob’s course. I think we will all be the better for it.
Look forward to getting to know you and your wife. I won’t be Skyping with anybody this weekend, though, as our church is having a women’s conference.
Talk soon,
Dawn

Glad you like it. Yes, poor thing, it’s been neglected. But hopefully by the time you come back I will have brought it back to life.

Dawn,
The coffee looks good enough to drink!
Your name stood out under the Traffic Network Builder because I went to school with a Dawn Anderson in Federal Way, WA back in the 70′s. I wonder??
I’ve been thinking of my own “25 Things” but only up to lucky number 13 (not a good place to be stuck, I’m thinking … lol).
I am closer to my grandkids than you … same house. IMPOSSIBLE to get thing done. Speak of the devil(s) I gotta go ……… come see me if you can.

Hi Janice,
Thanks for stopping by.
No, I grew up in Mississippi and later married an Anderson, hence the name (no longer married to him, by the way). However, I have a son who now lives in Vancouver, WA. I have visited him once since he’s been there and am planning another visit in September.
Well, you have me beat as far as how close you are to your grandkids, but not for long. I’m in the process of selling my house and will move into my daughter’s “mother-in-law” apartment afterward. We do plan to close it off so I can lock the door if I want to keep them out. But you know how often THAT will happen!
Living right behind them, they pop in whenever they want, so I KNOW they will do that even more when I’m in the same house.
Thanks for visiting.
